Under 18 Match Report - Aquinas v St Marys

SBYL U-12 Premier - Sat 20th March 2010

Aquinas 3 St Marys 1

A beautiful early Spring morning and the artificial pitch at Ashfield saw perfect conditions for football.

The opening 15 minutes was a cagey affair, with Aquinas creating the better chances.

After 15 minutes, Daniel Guinness won the ball on the left and picked out Peter Webb on the edge of the square who hit a first time shot over the keepers head to make it 1-0.

10 minutes into the second half, Frank McCormack, from an Aquinas throw in, played a super ball into Enda Kelly McCann in the middle, who turned and slipped a defender before slotting the ball into the right corner.

Aquinas were now playing well and some good interplay on the right from John Blaney and Ryan McGuigan worked the ball to Jake Morrison who picked out James Smith charging down the middle and struck a fierce shot which the keeper could only parry and Gerard Kervick was on hand to knock in the rebound for his first goal for Aquinas.

At 3-0, Aquinas made some changes, and lost a bit of momentum before the last minute when St Marys were awarded a dubious free kick on the left, and struck a high shot which Tiarnan Cahill in goal was unable to hold onto before dropping into the net. FT 3-1

This was a good game with a lot of positives for Aquinas. The new centre back pairing of the two James, Smith and Carson, is starting to look very solid, and with wing backs Frank McCormack and Darragh Doherty having super games, the back four played well as a cohesive unit.

Peter Webb was strong in midfield, despite feeling unwell, and took his goal well before being replaced by Gerard Kervick who fully deserved his first goal for the team. Daniel Guinness was everywhere and Jake Morrison and Enda Kelly McCann had super games on the wings. Peter Lavery and Ryan McGuigan up front looked dangerous every time they got the ball and John Blaney looked sharp despite also feeling unwell.
