Aquinas U -12s were able to take their minds off the transfer tests with a rare Sunday outing against St Marys at Mallusk.
St Marys started better, pinning Aquinas back down the left flank, forcing a series of corners and coming close to scoring on a number of occasions. When Aquinas did manage to clear their lines however, they looked dangerous in attack, with John Blaney particularly lively down the left. After 10 minutes he broke to the byeline and pulled a delightful ball back across the square for Jake Morrison to thump home and open the scoring.
St Marys came back however and shortly after equalized with a free header from another corner. Aquinas continued to struggle with defending the set pieces and they conceded again in the last minute of the half when yet another free header went in off the post. HT 1-2.
This was actually quite a good game by now, and Aquinas started the second half brightly. Enda KellyMcCann made a storming run down the left and when his shot was parried by the excellent St Marys keeper, Peter Lavery was on hand to sweep in the rebound to pull level again. Aquinas then took the lead with a brilliant individual goal by Daniel Guinness who broke through from the half way line and finished superbly.
The drama continued as St Marys fought back, forcing panic in the Aquinas defence and equalizing from a penalty after an Aquinas hand ball, which Jack Johnston in goal was unlucky not to save.
As the game moved to a conclusion, Aquinas had the chance to snatch victory with another penalty after James Smith was brought down in the box, but Peter Webb, who had been superb throughout, could only pull the ball wide of the post, and the game finished all square 3-3.
