The under 11's started the new 2007/08 season at Hydebank with a 6-3 victory over newcomers Carniny Youth. The old adage that this was a game of 2 halves was never more true.
Aquinas started nervously and straight from the kick-off put themselves under pressure with a series of miskicks and misplaced passes as well as a lack of communication. The team then settled down and put some presure on the Carniny defence. There were a couple of half chances that Carniny cleared before last seasons leading scorer, Dominic Mooney, got on the scoreboard. As the Carniny defence pushed up, the ball was played over the top and Dominic raced clear to push the ball past the keeper. Aquinas kept the pressure on and went close again with Mooney proving a constant worry to the Carniny defence. Aquinas then scored again when following good play down the right between Mooney and Neill O'Reiily, the ball was crossed and evaded the Carniny keeper.Kevin Ballentine came in at the back post and pushed the ball into the net from the edge of the yard box. Aquinas were well on top now and shots rained in on the Carniny keeper. Following a pass through the defence, Mooney reacted first and scored his second goal as he easily beat the Carniny keeper to put Aquinas 3 up. Carniny started to fight back but the Aquinas defence, well marshalled by Mikey Cummings and Conor King and ably supported by Rory Smyth and Aaron Martin, were able to clear their lines.Mooney then completed his hat-trick when he raced past 2 defenders and then rounded the keeper and cooly slotted the ball past the defender on the line to put Aquinas 4 up. With minutes remaining to half -time, Mooney scored again following a slip in the Carniny defence. At half -time Aquinas lead 5-0.
Carniny started the 2nd half with the wind at their backs and pressed Aquinas back but once again the Aquinas defence held strong with some strong tackling. From one such clearance, Rory Smyth played the ball forward and the ball was laid off to Mooney who drew the defence before passing inside to the onrunning David Smyth who shot into the corner of the net to put Aquinas six up. Whether it was over confidence, lack of effort or just simply bad play, Aquinas started to fade and Carniny came back strongly. For the first time, the Aquinas defence failed to clear their lines and the Carniny attcker nipped in to score their first goal. This gave confidence to Carniny who continued to take the game to Aquinas and a 2nd goal quickly followed when the Aquinas midfield failed to track back and allowed the Carniny midfielder to burst into the penalty area and score easily. A further goal duly arrived for Carniny when following a needless free kick given away by the Aquinas defence about 10 yards outside the penalty area, the Carniny player hit a well struck kick high into the net, giving Dermo in the Aquinas nets, little chance. Carniny tails were really up and they continued to press but were unable to add any further scores.
As stated, this was a game of 2 halves. Aquinas faded badly in the second half with the mid-field players in particular going missing. It was fortunate that they had built up a good lead in the first half but disappointing the way they finished the second.
Improvement will be required in the coming matches.
The under 11s were in action at Billy Neill, coming home eventual 3 - 2 winners after a long hard slog.
The under 16s, also playing at Ulidia last night, were held to a goalless draw by Larne Youth.
Lets have any other pre season results as they come in and we'll get them on the news. |
